ABOUT CHIVA AFRICA

CHIVA Africa is the only professional paediatric organisation providing critical training and support for health professionals on the frontlines of the AIDS epidemic in South Africa.

South Africa has the largest AIDS epidemic in the world – more than 5.5 million people are living with HIV/AIDS. For far too long it lacked the resources and infrastructure to effectively address the disease.

Over the past 7 years, CHIVA Africa has sent more than 150 volunteer teams from the UK to help train South African health professionals in all aspects of long-term treatment of children and adolescents with HIV.

Our teams are made up of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians and psychologists.

Thanks to the collaboration with our counterparts in South Africa, more than 50,000 children in KwaZulu-Natal alone are now on life saving Anti-Retroviral treatment – up from less than 3,000 six years ago. We are now working towards replicating the success story from KwaZulu-Natal into the Eastern Cape and Northwest Province.

Prior to Anti-Retroviral Treatment, most HIV-infected children in South Africa did not live beyond 5 years old.

Now, the long-term effect of HIV on children can be contained with appropriate treatment.

Our teams have made hundreds of visits to hospitals,

clinics and orphanages andCHIVA Africa - Mother and child

trained thousands of healthcare workers.
