Our Mission
- Share knowledge, experience and practical skills learned over decades working in the field of Paediatric HIV in the UK, with colleagues in South Africa
- Teach South African healthcare professionals how to provide long term care, which includes anti-retroviral treatment, for children with HIV and their families
- Facilitate the provision of good healthcare services delivering effective, safe and quality HIV care to children and adolescents through well-trained healthcare professionals working in South Africa
- Facilitate the sharing of knowledge and the development of professional support networks across provinces, hospitals and clinics throughout South Africa as local experts join the CHIVA Africa mentoring teams
Our Objectives
Teaching
- To provide ongoing practical and technical support for all levels of healthcare professionals
- To produce relevant, comprehensive, practical teaching resources
- To deliver effective training to healthcare professionals at all levels of the healthcare system
Partnering
- To work closely with the provincial Departments of Health to assist with the implementation of national strategies for paediatric health care delivery
- To liaise with key staff at all ARV accredited provincial hospitals on a regular basis to ensure CHIVA Africa always addresses local priorities appropriately
- To reach key staff working at primary health care clinics, care homes, schools and NGOs
Replicating
- To provide practical training on the ground
- We take the proven medical apprentice approach to training HIV medical staff
- 'See one, do one, teach one' is a dynamic, sustainable model that mobilises and inspires South Africa's medical workforce
- As a team we open the eyes of local staff to the needs of adolescents, thereby helping to make the country's HIV positive young people receive the appropriate care and opening up young lives to new possibilities
- Training is designed to suit the relevant trainee profile; including workshops and lecture based sessions, one –to –one mentoring, ward rounds and case conferences - resulting in better care and treatment for disadvantaged children living with HIV
