Dr. Karyn Moshal

Executive Director

 

Karyn founded and has overall responsibility for the programme. This includes programme development, design and strategy, overseeing its implementation, management of London and South African staff, liaison and planning with provincial Departments of Health, South African Universities, funders and prospective partners.

Karyn qualified from the University of Cape Town before training further in the UK and USA in paediatrics and infectious diseases. She is currently London-based and a consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. She has extensive experience in paediatric HIV care and is part of the team which runs the Great Ormond Street Hospital paediatric HIV clinic, one of the largest and oldest (est. 1991) in Western Europe. She is a fourth generation South African who grew up in KZN.

 

 

Heidi Nathan

Deputy Director

 

Heidi has a BA (Hons) Business Studies, Corporate Finance Major, London Guildhall University. A member of the CHIVA Africa team since September 2010 and with over 20 years experience of working within varied commercial and charitable environments, Heidi is responsible for overseeing all fundraising, marketing and communications aspects of the CHIVA Africa activities.

In addition, Heidi is responsible for design and production of all communications material - including publicity material and newsletters, re-branding programme and launch of new website and day to day management of the London office and activities.

 

  

Sandy Bloomberg

Administration and Communications

 

Sandy is responsible for written publications, collating monitoring and evaluation forms to reports, circulation of teaching materials and guidelines.

In addition, Sandy schedules UK teams, booking flights and disseminating relevant information to volunteers. She organises all meetings and events in London and provides administrative support where needed.

Candy Duggan  

Lead and Nursing Coordinator

 

Candy is a registered general nurse (RGN), a registered sick children's nurse (RSCN) and registered health visitor (RHV). She also has an MSc in the social anthropology of childhood & child development, a post graduate diploma in health service management and is an independent nurse prescriber.

She has been working with children and families affected by HIV since 1989 and set up the HIV family clinic at Great Ormond Street Hospital with colleagues in 1991, providing comprehensive care to families diagnosed with HIV infection. She has worked as an HIV clinical nurse specialist and clinical supervisor in North East London where she also provided HIV education & training for health and social service staff.

 

Dr Colin Ball

Medical Coordinator and Trustee

 

Colin qualified from St. Thomas' in London in 1979, and had first-hand experience working in South African paediatrics at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, in 1982 before the HIV epidemic emerged. Colin started running the paediatric side of the family HIV service at King's College initiated by Dr Karen Zwi from 1994. The service grew organically from the need to care for mostly local children of African HIV positive women many of whom found themselves displaced from Africa by circumstances such as civil unrest and war. Colin is currently the lead clinician for paediatric HIV at King's College.

 

Alice Armstrong

Adolescent Coordinator

 

Original from KwaZulu Natal, Alice completed her nursing degree and worked in Australia in Infectious Disease and Tropical Health. After moving to London she went on to become a Specialist HIV Nurse at the Mortimer Market Centre where she coordinated the Adolescent and Transition Clinic from Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital.

 

She has a post graduate diploma in tropical nursing and is a nurse prescriber. She recently completed her Msc in International health and conducted her field research on the service provision needs of young people living with HIV in KwaZulu-Natal. She is currently working with the Royal Tropical Institute to carry out the community consultation for the development of WHO guidelines on HIV testing and counsellor for adolescents.

 

Alice brings fresh ideas and an international flavour to our programme, by virtue of her current work in the Netherlands, and consultancy with UNICEF and WHO.

 

Part of her job included weekly clinics at the great Ormond Street Hospital paediatric HIV clinic, in order to assist in the transition of the growing number of adolescents from the paediatric to adolescent clinic.
